The moral economy of sex work in Mombasa, Kenya

This paper investigates the process of individuals trying to figure out how neoliberal economy works by focusing on women selling sex in Mombasa, Kenya. The article will explore key tensions prevailing work through encounters with supernatural forces narrated sex. analysis presented argue that there are two define moral Mombasa: strong stratification among workers position a minority already better off more advantageous ways, thereby leaving most others precarity; and worries about changing masculinities result men who non-human. Both those signify anxieties surrounding an occupation historically allowed accumulate capital re-insert themselves into Kenyan society positions (see for instance, White 1990, Bujra 1977).
